Project pitch
Modelmaking course to get comfortable using different tools in the workshop and to gain the skill to make physical prototypes by hand. With no limits prescribed, I chose to make a model of a portable speaker. As part of the assignment, the item made should reflect a brand free of choice. I took inspiration from Dieter Rams designs for Braun with plain surfaces, colorful details, and wooden implements.
Sketches and Ideation
Due to the short amount of time, the ideation process was brief but intense. I combined two shapes that I found reflected the Braun tech produced in the 1960s in a modern way.
Process
The model is mainly made of polyurethane, laser-cut acrylic and wooden veneer put together with precision and massive amounts of superglue. Sanded multiple times to achieve perfect finish before being varnished in a warm grey tone with details in orange.
Outcome
The outcome of this short but intense project is a model of a portable speaker with ribbed air vents inspired by the old braun designs, combined with simplistic wooden sides and with bright orange detailing, adding a splash of color to the subtle grey. On the backside, you find connecting devices, bringing the speaker into the 21st century.
Keylearning - much can be achieved with small means and well-planned time.
